The goal of the Student Support Team (SST) is to provide early identification of, and early interventions for general education students in the areas of academic, behavior and social relations. At NCS, the SST is comprised of three general education teachers who each assume a role as chair of one of the three branches: learning support and care (academic), discipline and guidance (behavior), and social inclusion (peer relationships.) The SST can be considered a “think tank” on guiding teachers in delivering high-quality instruction as well as supporting teachers to implement interventions for small groups and individuals as needed. The SST is not a function of Special Education, although the team could, after interventions have been implemented, refer a student for a Special Education assessment.

The SST team uses many methods and insights to support students. In addition, Novato Charter School began working with Kim John Payne, Director of the Center for Social Sustainability in 2013. This partnership strengthened the work of the SST process and created a Student Support Action Committee (SSAC). The SSAC is comprised of Seventh and Eighth grade students who collaborate with teachers to further encourage healthy social interactions among students.
